Do you have a personal style? If so, how would you describe it? Are you friendly, positive, energetic, warm, and caring, ready for adventure?

Personal Style

Personal style is sometimes reflected in what you wear, but it is also defined by how you carry yourself, how you stand out, and how you express yourself. Style is a method or way of doing something that is unique to you. It is a combination of what you do, how you present yourself, and what you care about.

Your bariatric style comes through in your habits, how you interact with people, and especially how you care for yourself. It's not just what people see on the outside that defines your style, your inner energy and warmth are recognizable to others too.

If you haven’t given any thought to your personal style and how it can impact the way that you navigate your bariatric journey, here is a good place to start.

5 Elements to consider as you define your personal Bari Style.

1. The Inner You – How well do you know yourself?

Self-awareness … Take time to peel back the layers and get to know the true you. Understand what motivates you, distracts you, and makes you feel complete. It’s more important to focus on what you love than what you hate. When you really know your likes and dislikes, it’s easier to build a lifestyle that you can stick with long-term.

2. Your Energy – How are you showing up for yourself and others?

Enthusiasm, positivity, and an “I can do hard things attitude," are contagious. Celebration should be part of your journey right from the beginning. Don’t hold back your excitement until you reach your final goal, pat yourself on the back often, and show support for others who are working hard and achieving their goals, too. Hitting milestones and reveling in stories of triumph remind us that we are capable of achieving great things, even in the face of significant challenges. They can inspire us to push through difficult times and keep working towards our goals.

3. Your Hero Identity – Have you ever felt like a hero?

Here’s why you should. Heroes are people who face their fears, overcome significant challenges, advocate for others, and push themselves beyond where they think they can go. Bariatric surgery is truly a heroic journey. You might not be slaying dragons, but you are certainly climbing mountains in search of better health. It’s not easy, and you might feel like you are putting out fires along the way. Each challenge you face makes you stronger and more prepared to deal with whatever is lurking around the next corner. Be proud of every step you take and own your hero identity.

4. The Bariatric Community – Are you part of a bariatric community that understands you?

Embracing a new lifestyle is easier when you feel connected to it. Engage with the bariatric community and your medical team to have a support network outside of friends and family. They'll be the best accountability partners, cheerleaders, and resources for information. Having friends in the bariatric community makes the journey more enjoyable, and support groups can provide a comfortable, safe space when you need it so that your new bariatric life feels like home.

5. The Adventure – Have you embraced the whole bariatric journey?

Many people imagine the life they’ll live after they lose all of their weight, but until they reach that goal, they put life on hold. Why delay your happiness and pleasure when there is so much to enjoy along the way? Consider bariatric surgery your greatest adventure and take the trip in style.

Make this journey your own and turn it into something you'll remember forever. Take pictures, build a scrapbook, plan creative meals, try new activities, expect the unexpected, and enjoy the experience of discovering the new you.
